These days many of us have jobs that require us to stare at computer screens for hours at a time. Computer Vision Syndrome describes a group of eye and vision-related problems that result from prolonged use of computers, tablets, e-reader, cell phones.

Causes

  • Accommodative spasm
  • Lack or improper blinking
  • Uncorrected or under corrected vision problems
  • Improper lighting conditions
  • Poor posture
  • Air moving past the eye (direct air from fan, overhead vents)

Common Symptoms

  • Eye fatigue
  • Blurring of vision
  • Double vision
  • Redness
  • Eye pain
  • Dry eye
  • Headache
  • Neck and shoulder pain

Management

  • Comprehensive eye check-up
  • Compulsory eye check up for kids before starting schools
  • Follow 20-20-20 rule. Look away from the screen every 20 minutes or so and look at something around 20 feet away for about 20 Sec
  • Frequent blinking
  • Encourage kids to look at far objects(eg trees,stars)
  • Better work environment
  • Limit screen time
  • Ensure proper posture
  • Reduce glare from room light/ window
  • Proper positioning of computer screen
