What is Keratoconus?

An eye condition in which the clear tissue at the front of the eye(Cornea) becomes thin and develops a cone like bulge Keratoconus usually starts during puberty or in late teens. It often affects both eyes.

Cause

The cause of Keratoconus is largely unknown .Some studies have found that Keratoconus run in families. Eye allergies and eye rubbing is found to be a predisposing factor.

Symptoms of Keratoconus

  • Progressive blurring of vision
  • Double vision
  • Glare/Halos while looking at bright light

Diagnosis

  • Progressive blurring of vision
  • Double vision
  • Glare/Halos while looking at bright light

Treatment

Untreated Keratoconus can lead to permanent vision loss. Depends on the severity of the disease. Mild to moderate Keratoconus can be treated with Eye glasses and Contact lenses. Various types of Contact lenses are used like:

  • Rigid CL
  • Toric lenses
  • Hybrid lenses
  • Scleral lenses

Implantable Ring Segments

Implantable ring segments are small devices that are inserted into the cornea to improve vision or make it easier to fit with contact lenses. This ring helps to flatten the cornea and partially correct the cone shape caused by Keratoconus.

C3 R (Corneal collagen cross linking with Riboflavin)

C3 R (Corneal collagen cross linking with Riboflavin) is a treatment to arrest the progression of Keratoconus. With this procedure the bond between the corneal collagen fibers and surrounding proteins are increased.

In late stages patient may require Corneal transplantation ( Keratoplasty ) This is a surgical procedure in which the cornea of the patient is replaced with a cornea from a donor either fully ( penetrating keratoplasty) or partially ( lamellar keratoplasty)
